abstract = "The Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) mathematically describes
the contribution of the most important factors in the soil loss
process, and is the largest reference for estimating soil loss in
Brazil. The objective of this article is to analyze the
superficial erosion in the area under the influence of Dona
Francisca hydroelectric power plant using a GIS-based model
integrating USLE. According to the model results, the study area
experienced a average soil loss of 935 kg/ha/year, which is
considered low, when compared to other results. About 83% of the
study area presented soil loss values between 0 and 1t/ha/year,
and only 2% of the area showed loss soil values higher than
4t/ha/year. The areas covered by agriculture and/or livestock,
were the ones that contributed most to the formation of sediments
(laminar erosion), due to the agricultural practices developed in
areas of high slopes, as is the case of the cultivation of tobacco
in hillsides. Regarding the cumulative effects of the variables
composing the model, it is worth mentioning that the lack of
vegetation cover associated with high slopes and intense
precipitation are the conditions leading to higher soil loss
values, which is worsen when combined to inadequate management
                         related to non-conservationist practices.",
